Poem for Annie
I write this for a loved one
I knew for only five short days
And yet who touched our lives so deeply
And in so many different ways
This is a poem for Annie
Annabelle Autumn to be complete
A tiny precious little girl
Beautiful and sweet
A small and fragile wonder
Annie appeared on a Sunday morn
On April 17th 2016
My wonderful niece was born
I write these words to tell you
How we’re feeling now you’re gone
In the hopes that your dear memory
Will give us strength to carry on
So much we take for granted
That you never had the chance to do
You didn’t get to see this world
To open your eyes, take in the view
But what you would have seen sweet one
Is a family, close and dear
United by their love for you
They gathered to you near
Two uncles and an aunt to boot
Were awestruck by your grace
They cooed and fussed by your tiny bed
Held your hand and stroked your face
Five great- and grandparents came to you
Longing to spoil you when they could
With toys and sweets and gifts and treats
As only grandparents would
And there was older brother Freddie
With pirate smile and cheeky laugh
He didn’t quite know what was going on
Being only one and a half
But he was there bouncing around you
On laps of those who kept your side
He’s young to be sure,
But in his eyes I know I saw
A fierce loving brother’s pride
For I know something of brotherly love
(I’ve spent thirty years perfecting the art)
Of how a sister, caring, true and kind
Keeps a special place within your heart
And of course there was your mum and dad
Two more devoted parents there never were
For five fretful days and four sleepless nights
They only thought of her
Their sweet daughter fighting brave and strong
The object of their affection
They saw no wires, no tubes, no machines at all
But only clear perfection
In little boots and pink woolly cap
You were cradled in their arms
They would comfort, care and watch over you
To make sure you never came to harm
One day they’ll hold you tight once more
This is a fact I know
Somewhere, in a comfy chair, with love and care
They’ll rock you to and fro
They’ll whisper words of love to you
And they’ll look on you with pride
They’ll say that in the years that passed
They kept your memory deep inside
That you never were forgotten
For such miracles always stay
How they are so glad, to be your mum and dad
In every single way
And so I bring this poem to a close sweet Annie
It’s with sadness I speak farewell
But let me finally say, on this departing day
One more verse to our Annabelle
We got to gaze upon you
If only for a while
The sun’ll come out tomorrow
And she’ll be wearing Annie’s smile
Love Uncle Andy xxxx
